A delegation from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst) were welcomed by Professor HABAZAKI Hiroki (Dean, Faculty of Engineering), Professor TABE Yutaka (Director, International Exchange Office), Professor WATANABE Seiichi and Professor SHIBAYAMA Tamaki on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. Professor Laura Vandenberg (Acting Vice-Chancellor for Research and Engagement), Professor Michael Fox (Dean, College of Natural Sciences) and Dr. Kalpen Trivedi (Vice Provost for International Affairs and Director of the International Programs Office) visited our campus to seek opportunities for future faculty and student exchanges and collaborations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UMass Amherst is a leading public research university known for its academic excellence with nearly 32,000 students and over 200 distinct academic programs, including highly ranked programs in business, computer science, health care and the social sciences. The university has a strong focus on sustainability and the environment and is committed to addressing environmental challenges through various initiatives, academic programs and research projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

UMass Amherst and HU share a common thread in their origins; both institutions were initially founded as agricultural colleges\u2015Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1863 and Sapporo Agricultural College in 1876, respectively\u2015and Dr. William Smith Clark served as the third president of Massachusetts Agricultural College and the first vice president of Sapporo Agricultural College. The partnership between HU and UMass Amherst was established in 1976 to commemorate HU\u2019s 100th anniversary, making it one of HU\u2019s oldest inter-university exchange relationships with international institutions. More exchanges are expected in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n
