Shuto KANEKO

Japan
Master's course graduate March 2016

I’ve been motivated to become an engineer who can work internationally, as well as in Japan. I applied for e3, considering it is very important for my future career to learn my major in English and polish my communication skill in English.

Now I can say my English skills have improved a lot through the experience in e3. In our laboratory seminars, which take place every 2-3 weeks, all the presentations and discussions were done in English. Discussions with internationally experienced professors and many international students gave me a great opportunity for training. I also worked as one of the Student Officers (SO) to plan and run events for e3 community. Many group works and discussions with other international students were practical and enjoyable. Although I had a lot of difficulty at the beginning, gradually I became more confident thanks to all of the daily experiences.

I also had many international opportunities, like a two months internship in Londrina State University in Brazil and two international conferences in Kochi, Japan and Tampere, Finland. I couldn’t be brave and confident enough to challenge these opportunities without all the experience in e3. It is one of the unforgettable moments in my life that I received an Award for oral presentation in one of the conferences.

e3 and especially the activities as SO brought me a lot of opportunities to meet new people. One of the most impressive memories as SO was field trip in May 2015. It took long time to prepare and required lots of contribution, but in the end I learned a lot and made many friends. Afterwards I started planning other activities by myself and we had nice time together. These enjoyable times refreshed my mind and gave me a better focus on my research.

I can tell to my Japanese colleagues, be brave and take this opportunity to join e3!
